In a closed competition, Tentech designed a de-mountable covering for the event-court of Kröller-Müller Museum’s sculpture garden in Otterlo. The temporary nature of the project, displayed during the process of building up the structure and demounting it, was implemented as concept of the covering and utilized to create alterations of the structure. The project is divided in diagonal segments, which can be combined to make different sized coverings. A grid of foundation points makes it possible to place (smaller sized) pavilions freely. This adaptability gives the museum the possibility to respond differently to each event (expo’s, lectures, concerts, etc.) or to changes of project requirements.
Each pavilion consists out of a continuous tensioned membrane, supported by columns. The perimeter of the membrane is free of columns, instead it is tensioned by long cables to give the illusion of a cloth floating above the festival area. The membranes are connected to the columns by rain-drop shaped cable borders. The openings in these so formed high-points are covered with transparent material to bring daylight into the court. In a seemingly random pattern, columns are absent and at that location the membrane is directly connected to the foundation point. The lower points allow fresh air to flow and rain water to be carried off. The alternation of high and low points results into an amorphous sequence of vaults. They define the size and experience of the different spaces. The pavilion can be complemented with vertical membrane screens that provide privacy and shelter.
