In 2009 a new main stand for football club Telstar and Stormvogels in Sportpark Schoonenberg/Velsen has been opened, designed by Zwarts & Jansma Architects.
The stadium is situated on an old rural estate in Velsen. The design responds to its green surroundings by using natural materials. This is clearly shown at the stand itself: continuous wooden rafters carry a roof made of light transparent membrane. This uncommon solution provides the seating area with good lighting conditions. The interior with its business lounges also profits – they too remain well-lit despite of the canopy.
The canopy’s shape is defined by pulling down the centre point of each cloth, tensioning the membrane and creating a funnel. Specially designed collectors under these funnels lead the rainwater to the sewer, using flexible pipes.
